Memories are important in shaping our identities, but they are not absolute. Memories are fluid--over time and with new experiences, our interpretation of past events and by extension how we feel about them changes, changing how we remember those events and periods of our lives. So I while memories do matter, I think present experience is slightly more influential.
Being fluid, memories can be fabricated. For instance, subconscious promptings or even personal desire can modify details in memories, such as the way we felt etc

For me, memories can somehow be objective. People sharing the same memories can actually have different interpretations on these memories. Therefore, I don't think we are just the sum of our own memories. Even if they can be fabricated, there is something more in our mind that defines us, probably our own mindset and thinking. For example, a pair of twins may have very likely the same sum of memories. However, they may have their own way to treat and interpret their own memories. This differentiates them and that is why they are two different individuals.
