Memories are important in shaping our identities, but they are not absolute. Memories are fluid--over time and with new experiences, our interpretation of past events and by extension how we feel about them changes, changing how we remember those events and periods of our lives. So I while memories do matter, I think present experience is slightly more influential.
Being fluid, memories can be fabricated. For instance, subconscious promptings or even personal desire can modify details in memories, such as the way we felt etc
